Top 5 Countries to Study Abroad

Despite historical trends that show the United States and the United Kingdom to be the countries that attract the most international students each year, young adults’ perceptions ranked countries primarily in Asia with less established, but promising, economies as the best countries to study abroad.

The Best Countries to Study Abroad ranking draws from a global perception-based survey and ranks countries based on scores from a compilation of five equally weighted country attributes: culturally accessible, fun, has many cultural attractions, would consider attending university there and a country that provides top-quality education. More than 6,500 adults who are 35 or younger filled out surveys for the 2021 Best Countries rankings.

These are the top five countries to study abroad, according to young adults around the world.

Number 5: Indonesia

Indonesia brought in more than 7,600 international students in 2020, according to UNESCO. The country is home to two global universities, including the University of Indonesia and the Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Number 4: Egypt

Egypt is home to 16 global universities, including Cairo University, Mansoura University, and Ain Shams University. Egypt’s Cairo University also ranked No. 6 in the Best Global Universities in Africa ranking, and No. 90 in the Best Global Universities for Pharmacology and Toxicology ranking.

Number 3: United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven emirates, brought in over 225,000 international students in 2020, according to UNESCO. The country is home to Khalifa University of Science & Technology, which ties in spot No. 144 in the Best Global Universities in Asia Rankings and No. 82 in the Best Universities for Chemical Engineering.

Number 2: South Korea

South Korea brought in more than 84,000 international students in 2020, according to UNESCO. The country is home to more than three dozen global universities, including Seoul National University, the No. 1 Best Global Universities in South Korea, and No. 15 Best Global Universities in Asia.

Number 1: Turkey

Turkey moves up four positions to the No. 1 spot in the 2021 ranking of the best countries to study abroad. Turkey welcomed more than 125,000 international students in 2020, according to UNESCO. The country’s several dozen global universities include the highly ranked Boğaziçi University and Middle East Technical University.
