University of Windsor Description

The story of our university began in September of 1857, when the first students arrived to study at its predecessor, Assumption College. In the 160+ years since, the small Roman Catholic college gave rise to a non-denominational, comprehensive, teaching and learning university. More than 16,000 students attend the University of Windsor today and its alumni family boasts 100,000 members.

The University of Windsor is a comprehensive, student-focused university with nearly 15,000 students enrolled in a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs including several professional schools such as: Law, Business, Engineering, Education, Nursing, Human Kinetics and Social Work.

We have strong student-faculty relationships, exceptional award-winning faculty and innovative staff. With comparatively small class sizes and a comprehensive array of student services, clubs and associations, UWindsor provides students with a friendly and supportive learning environment.

UWindsor’s strategic plan has five priorities that directly impact our students: providing an exceptional undergraduate experience; pursuing strengths in research and graduate education; recruiting and retaining the best faculty and staff; engaging and building the community through partnerships; and promoting international engagement.

The University of Windsor also ushered in a new era in September 2015 with the opening of classes at the first phase of its downtown campus in the heart of Windsor’s core. The new building, Windsor Hall — which retains the historic facade of the former Windsor Star newspaper building — houses the School of Social Work and the Centre for Executive and Professional Education.

The second phase of the downtown campus is home to the School of Creative Arts, located in the century-old site of the Windsor Armouries and the adjacent Alan Wildeman Centre for Creative Arts.

The university overlooks the Detroit River on one of Canada’s most beautiful waterfronts and is minutes away from North America’s busiest international border crossing. This location speaks to UWindsor’s strength as an internationally oriented, multi-disciplined institution that actively enables a broad diversity of students, faculty and staff to make a better world through education, scholarship, research and engagement.

University of Windsor Campus Description

What do you want to do today? As a University of Windsor student—living in the heart of the Windsor-Detroit metropolitan area—the choice is yours.

The UWindsor campus enjoys a prime location, only minutes from both downtown Windsor and downtown Detroit, two cities with distinct personalities and no shortage of things to keep you busy all year long.

Rollerblade along the scenic riverfront trail, then meet some friends for Ethiopian food on University Avenue. Attend an art opening at a small gallery in Windsor or visit the iconic collections at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Catch a local jazz trio at a Windsor bar or head into Detroit for a White Stripes concert. Ice skate in Charles Clark Square or pound the plexiglass at a Red Wings game.

UWindsor students enjoy the best of both worlds. They live in a safe, student-friendly, diverse Canadian town only minutes from an American cultural metropolis. Visit us soon to get a firsthand look at what makes Windsor-Detroit such an amazing place to live and learn.
